Day Three In East Texas

The itinerary for our trip had called for a visit to Jefferson with some free time for shopping and sightseeing but some of the other stops took longer than expected so our visit to Jefferson was cancelled. However we had our car so when the bus headed for Grandview Jerry and I drove to Jefferson for a short visit. Remember we spent one night of our honeymoon in the Excelsior hotel in Jefferson.

We found the Excelsior Hotel just as it was in 1963 and in fact just about the same as it was in 1859! We stopped at the curb across the street and wandered in for a look. The threshold of the entry door is wooden and appears to be worn down about 2 inches from the years and years of foot steps entering the lobby.

The front desk sits close to the stairs that led up to the room that we had in 1963.

The temperature was around 30 degrees when we arrived in Jefferson early in the morning. There was a heavy frost and the wind was calm. As we drove around town the sun began shining on the tree tops melting the frost and the colored fall leaves were falling everywhere. It was like driving through a snowstorm of mostly yellow and gold leaves with a few reds mixed in. It was quite a sight.


Jefferson is a town of about 2000 residents but has quite a few magnificent old homes. After concluding our tour we headed home to pickup Dumplin at the resort. We were only about 2 hours behind the bus when we came to Grandview.
