Waco
Today we visited the Waco Mammoth Site. The pictures below show the dig site with bones of the Columbian Mammoth still in place. The Columbian Mammoth was believed to have little hair but very large tusks.
Researchers believe that an adult Mammoth could weigh up to 20 thousand pounds. They lived here during the ice age in North America. We were told that at that time Texas temperatures averaged about 10 degrees cooler than now. The animals here were believed to have died in a flood in this bottomland between the Brazos and Bosque Rivers.
Then we drove downtown. This monument marks the site of the deadliest tornado in Texas History. It tore through downtown Waco on May 11, 1953.
The back side of the monument lists the names of the 144 people killed by the disaster.
This home is called the cotton castle. It was built in 1890 by a cotton broker in Waco during the time when cotton was king in Central Texas.
