Wednesday Travel

From Rosenberg we drove around the south side of Houston and headed into Baytown on the Fred Hartman Bridge. The air was hazy making photography difficult. The cable stays were bright yellow.

After turning around and driving across the bridge again we headed for Galveston. Along the way in Bacliff we found a seafood restaurant called Clifton by the Sea.



This was the view from our table looking across Galveston Bay.




We ordered fried shrimp and I chose mashed potatoes and a vegetable medley. The shrimp was very good.






This old boat was on the lawn beside the restaurant.








In Galveston we drove by Moody gardens.



They now have a huge hotel and a Schlitterbahn water park at Moody Gardens. The landscape is elaborate.



Sue Ellen and I had a giant malt at this drugstore many years ago.



The inside of the store is much the same except for the art exhibit upstairs. Long ago they had a straw art exhibit. Everything was made from rice straw. I was disappointed that it was gone.



I remember Sue Ellen liking the many oleander in Galveston. I took this picture for her.



We stopped on the sea wall to watch the waves and listen to the roar of them crashing on the beach.



This dog was being safe by wearing his life jacket.



From Galveston we took the ferry to the Bolivar peninsula.




As we drove east along the coast line we saw lots of homes just waiting to be destroyed by the next hurricane. At least most of them were raised to escape minor flooding.





Then we continued on to Port Arthur to see the Rainbow Bridge the tallest in Texas. The link also shows the new cable stay bridge that parallels the old Rainbow Bridge.





Looking forward from the top of the bridge. We had the feeling of being very high!




Our motel in Beaumont was new and had only been open seven days. They did not have spreads for the beds yet. Grandma wasn't sure she could get up on the bed because it was so high. The computers in the office were not yet functional so our credit card was imprinted with an old hand operated machine!




The carpet in the halls had an interesting design.
