Perspective
Today was a beautiful day - at least it was a beautiful day in north central Texas. After days of sultry hot humid weather we were greeted today with a brisk north wind, light rain and cool temperatures. Except for the images on the TV screen it was a perfect beginning for the fall season. Some fall grain has already been planted and this is perfect weather to get it started growing. We got about one and a half inches total rainfall as the storm center moved north about 80 miles east of us. Texas TV has been giving 24 hour coverage to the storm damage along the coast.
It must have been a day like this 108 years ago as great grandpa Samuel and his 7 children may have been storing the last of the season's corn crop in the crib for winter feed for the mules. Without TV and radio they had no way to know that eight thousand people in Galveston and along the Gulf Coast had just lost their lives to the deadliest hurricane ever to strike the Texas coastline.
IKE followed about the same path as that storm in 1900 but thanks to the 17 foot high seawall that has been constructed in Galveston and to modern communications that provided several days advance warning only a few lives were lost. By late this afternoon a cold front moved in from the northwest bringing a glimmer of sunlight as the near full moon rose overhead.
While out enjoying the cool breeze I began to remember how our homesite looked when we built this house 20 years ago. There was only one tree on the hill and that provided a comforting shade for Great in her lawn chair as she sat for hours watching the early stages of foundation and steel framing. Most of the present trees I have planted but the hackberry and mesquite just appeared by themselves.
