Tuesday to Cranfills Gap
Today our first stop was in Cranfills Gap. We started our tour with a stop at this church near the base of Cranfills Mountain. This Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Church was built in 1917 to serve the congregation that had been meeting at the old Rock Church about 3 miles outside town.
I had planned to have lunch at the Horny Toad but they are closed on Tuesday.
The only other place we found was Tommy's convenience store. They make very good burgers and onion rings.
Then we drove east to the "Old Rock Church". It has been renovated since I last visited. It has a fresh coat of paint both inside and out. The red and green accents are new as well as shutters on the windows.
The paint really freshened up the inside of the sanctuary.
The huge wood stove still serves its purpose.
The sun coming through the windows made an interesting pattern on the floor.
The pump organ is still in the balcony. Wish I could hear if played. The stairs were open today and we could climb to the balcony but they were very very steep!
Next we visited Our Savior's Lutheran Church in the tiny community of Norse, the area where the first Norwegian settlers came....
... and were buried.
A marker memorializes those early settlers.
A stone fence still outlines the church yard and cemetery.
