Sutter's Mill

This is a reconstruction of Sutter's mill where "goald" was first discovered on January, 1848. The original mill built over the American river was destroyed by a flood circa 1850 but enough of the foundation timbers remained to indicate the size of the original construction. Traces of the shiny metal were discovered in the tail race of the mill by a workman doing maintenance on the mill.

The machinery was very crude consisting only of a crank on the water wheel that operated a rod which in turn moved the saw blade up and down while the men moved the log against the saw blade.

This is the view today looking across the American river at the spot where that first discovery was made. This is in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada range.
